Every night, food disappears from the castle kitchens. Fish, meat. Always the same amount, always at the same time. This is no ordinary thief.
Mauvélis, with mauve hair and golden eyes, decides to keep watch from the shadows. She eventually sees him: Brumel, a large wildcat, silently heading back toward the forest. She follows him—and discovers four hungry kittens nestled inside a centuries-old tree.
From then on, Mauvélis no longer tries to stop the thief. Every day, she leaves food at the edge of the woods, and a fragile trust begins to grow. Then a lord decides to cut down part of the forest to expand his pastures. The princess gathers old maps, testimonies, and evidence, and goes to defend this family’s refuge herself.
What children learn
- Understanding before judging — behavior that seems wrong may have a reason we do not know.
- Empathy — Brumel does not steal out of malice; he is feeding his kittens.
- Protecting habitats — cutting down a forest means taking away the home of those who live there.
- Trust must be earned — Mauvélis respects Brumel’s distance and lets the bond develop naturally.
