Princess Briselde and Orkan the Mountain Leopard

Goats are disappearing in the village of Valfrange. Everyone blames the leopard that was seen prowling near the peaks. No one has checked.

Briselde arrives in the village as winter approaches. She refuses to condemn an animal without proof and decides to investigate herself: the footprints in the mud, the tracks around the pens, and the habits of each predator. What she eventually establishes contradicts everyone — the culprits are hungry wolves that came down from the highlands after a harsh winter. Orkan, the mountain leopard, is actually keeping those wolves at bay by occupying his territory.

Revealing the truth is not enough: Briselde then helps the villagers reinforce their pens, so that people and wildlife can continue to share the mountain.

This is the most « mystery » volume in the collection, and the only one in which the heroine is right against an entire village.

What the child gains

• Critical thinking — not following the crowd, looking for facts, and accepting the need to change one’s mind when faced with evidence.
• Justice — never accuse anyone without checking, even when everyone agrees.
• The balance between species — one predator keeps another at bay; nature is more subtle than “good” and “bad.”
• Living together rather than eliminating — the chosen solution protects the herds without eliminating the predators.
