What if the being that helps you carry on could no longer live peacefully without you either?
Some animals do more than share our home: they occupy an entire life. This book explores this powerful bond, on both sides of the door.
Why do some people develop such an intense attachment to their dog or cat that they can barely imagine their life without them? And what does the animal experience when we leave?
“More Than an Animal” brings together what research has truly established about attachment between humans, dogs, and cats: hyperattachment, anxiety and separation problems, the role of oxytocin and contact, and the sometimes immense grief caused by losing an animal—all supported by 18 authentic, published studies, referenced with their DOI.
The book takes a rare approach: it never makes those who love deeply feel guilty, does not romanticize dependence, and refuses to turn hypotheses into certainties. When science knows, it states this with its source; when it does not know, it says so.
In this book
- How an animal becomes a refuge after bereavement, a breakup, or loneliness.
- What “attachment,” “secure base,” and “hyperattachment” mean, without jargon.
- Why a dog destroys things, barks, or relieves itself in our absence—and what you need to stop doing.
- Why a cat that urinates outside the litter box is not acting “out of revenge.”
- Two concrete action plans: if your animal struggles with your absences, and if you are the one who can no longer bring yourself to leave.
- A relationship test with a few questions to help you understand your bond.
- How to love without allowing love to shrink two lives.
