What millennia of fascination with cats tell us about humanity.
What if our fascination with cats ultimately said more about us than about them?
Companion, protector, predator, sacred animal, witch’s creature, good-luck charm, bad omen, guardian of the unseen—the cat has occupied almost every role humanity could assign to it. Today, it is one of the animals most present in our homes and culture.
Feline Essence explores this relationship at the crossroads of ethology, psychology, history, ancient civilizations, beliefs, and philosophical reflection.
The Book’s Journey
The journey begins with the real cat: its origins, domestication, senses, territory, language, intelligence, and attachment to humans.
Then the perspective widens. Why do we seek its presence so much? Can it perceive our emotions? What do we really know about purring? Why did ancient civilizations attribute so many powers to it?
The book then explores the Egypt of Bastet, Mediterranean, Asian, Nordic, and Islamic traditions, European legends, black cats, witches, and superstitions.
An entire section addresses the most mysterious territory: cats that seem to anticipate an event, their presence beside the sick and dying, synchronicities, dreams, and the sensation of a presence after losing a companion. Each time, the same rule applies: distinguish what science establishes, what traditions have passed down, and what belongs to personal experience.
Finally, the cat becomes a mirror. Its way of guarding its territory, choosing how close to be, moving away and then returning raises deeply human questions—about our boundaries, our need for recognition, our relationship with rest, solitude, and loss.
